About this simulator
The Data Governance Day-to-Day Simulator is a free, browser-based exercise that puts you in the seat of the person who has to answer ten governance incidents in a row — the kind that arrive as a Slack message rather than as a project. Marketing wants the "Active Customer" formula changed because their numbers disagree with Sales. A stale table is quietly costing five figures a month in cloud spend. New data scientists spend weeks finding datasets that already exist. Each incident offers three plausible responses, and none of them is free.
Every choice moves five DAMA-DMBOK indicators — Efficiency, Trust, Accountability, Security, and Context — and draws down a fixed budget. The point is the trade-off: the fastest fix usually costs accountability, and the most rigorous one usually costs budget and goodwill. After the tenth incident the simulator scores the pattern of your decisions rather than any single answer, and explains which DMBOK principle each one leaned on.
It takes about ten minutes and needs no sign-up. Your decisions are scored in your browser and stay there. The leaderboard is the one exception: if you choose to publish your result, the display name you type, your score and how long the run took are saved so every other player can see them.

Do I need to know DAMA-DMBOK to use it?
No. Each scenario is written in plain operational language, and the debrief after every decision names the DMBOK principle behind it. Many people use the simulator as their first introduction to the framework rather than as a test of it.
Is there a single correct answer to each scenario?
No, and the most thorough option is not always the best one. Every option is one a real organization has chosen. The strategic fixes usually do the most for the five indicators, but they also cost the most, and the budget you have left is a quarter of the score. The strongest quarter mixes thorough fixes with cheaper ones in the incidents where the money matters more than the extra points.
Is it free, and does it collect my data?
It is free and requires no account. Your decisions are scored in your browser and never leave it. Publishing to the leaderboard is optional and the only thing that is sent to us: the display name you type, your final score and how long the run took, which then appear on the same global board every other player sees.
What does the final score mean?
Three quarters of the score is the average of Efficiency, Trust, Accountability, Security, and Context; one quarter is the budget you have left, counted up to the $100,000 you start with. That blend is rescaled to 0–100, where 0 is always taking the quickest fix and 100 is the best quarter the ten incidents allow. It is a reading of your decision-making style, not a certification or a benchmark of your organization.
